Why has RAM become more expensive, and what does it mean for your laptop?
RAM prices depend on supply, demand and memory type. TrendForce's public September summaries describe pressure from servers and AI, not uniform increases on every product. Compare current quotes for the same module and complete computer configuration. Buy memory when measurements show a bottleneck, not simply because a forecast predicts more expensive chips.
Price context checked on 16 October 2026. This article uses public summaries, not a purchased market report or an index of Danish retailers. The buying advice is our assessment; forecasts belong to the named source.
What do we actually know about prices?
TrendForce's September 30, 2026 DRAM Contract Price summary describes stable contract prices during that period, alongside constrained PC DRAM supply and manufacturing capacity shifting to servers. Stable prices in one period and a risk of later increases can coexist.
In its September 24 fourth-quarter forecast summary, TrendForce points to AI and server demand but different trends for server and consumer products. This is an outlook, not proof that your next memory module or every laptop has increased by a particular percentage.
Why do AI and servers matter?
HBM for AI, server RAM and ordinary PC memory are not the same product. TrendForce's summaries describe capacity being prioritised towards server products. This can constrain PC supply; it does not mean an HBM module can be installed in your laptop.
DDR4, DDR5 and soldered LPDDR must be assessed separately. An older standard is not automatically cheaper or a better purchase. Use only the type specified for your exact computer.
Chip, module and computer prices are different
A finished memory module has costs beyond the chips. A computer contains much more than RAM. This table helps you compare; it is not a price forecast.
| Price level | How to use it |
|---|---|
| DRAM contract price | Market direction for large contracts; not a Danish SO-DIMM retail price. |
| Retail memory module | Compare the same part number, capacity, type, shipping and date. |
| Complete laptop | Compare CPU, RAM, SSD, screen, battery, keyboard, condition and terms. |
Why might a laptop become more expensive?
More expensive components can put pressure on a new computer's total price. In our assessment, stock, promotions, model changes, exchange rates and seller terms also belong in an actual comparison. A lower memory specification can hide a change in value even when the price tag stays the same.
We are not documenting a price increase for every laptop. Ask for a dated quote for the configuration you need and examine a refurbished alternative with the same workload requirements. A used machine is not guaranteed to be cheapest after battery replacement, upgrading and setup.
How to avoid a panic purchase
Decide using your needs and total cost, not a shortage headline. Individuals and companies can use the same sequence:
- Measure memory, CPU and disk during your normal work. More RAM helps only if memory is part of the problem.
- Check slots and manufacturer compatibility before ordering. A cheap DDR5 module does not help a DDR4 machine.
- Compare upgrading, refurbished and new with the same necessary specifications, delivery and terms.
- Ask how long the price is valid and which alternatives exist. For a company: trial a representative configuration before a larger purchase.

Do higher chip prices make every laptop more expensive?
No. It can create price pressure, but an actual price also depends on configuration, stock, promotions and terms. Compare current quotes for equivalent specifications; a global forecast is not a Danish retail price index.
Should I buy RAM now before it becomes more expensive?
Only if there is a demonstrated need, the part is compatible and the total upgrade makes sense. We cannot promise a future price level. Unnecessary memory still costs money, even on sale.
